Savings-goal guide: months to reach your target

Estimate how many whole monthly contributions remain, without assuming investment returns.

When this tool helps

A simple target is easier to plan when you separate the goal, the amount already saved and the amount you expect to add each month. This tool counts the whole monthly contributions needed to close that gap. It deliberately does not invent interest or investment growth.

Enter all three amounts in the same currency. The answer rounds the remaining months up: if you need part of another monthly contribution, that final month is still needed. A contribution schedule you cannot maintain will not make the estimate reliable.

What to enter

These are the candidate Android fields, not a form on this website. Editable fields in the app start empty; modes and units are selected separately.

Savings target
The total amount you want to reach.
Already saved
What you have allocated to this goal.
Monthly contribution
The amount you expect to add each month.

The remaining gap is 10,000.00. At 500.00 per month, twenty monthly contributions close that gap without any assumed interest.

Formula and assumptions

Months = round up [(target − already saved) ÷ monthly contribution], with the gap no lower than zero

  • Contributions are constant and no interest, inflation, withdrawals or fees are modelled.
  • The answer is a month count, not a promised calendar date or a guarantee that the funds will be available.

A common mistake to avoid

Do not count money needed for another purpose as already saved for this goal. Use the Compound savings tool only when you deliberately want to explore a constant-rate assumption.

Find this tool in the Android update

  1. When you have the redesigned Android update, open Tools and search for Savings goal, or find it under Money.
  2. Open the tool, choose the mode or units relevant to your task, then enter your own values.
  3. Review the result and explanation. Use Calculate & save only if you want the calculation kept in local History; Copy result does not send it to our server.

This guide is an educational preview of the update in testing, not an announcement that Google Play has approved or published it. Calculations are in the native app; no web calculator or download is offered on this page.

Questions about Savings goal

What if I have already reached the target?

The result says Goal reached when the saved amount meets or exceeds the target.

What if the monthly contribution is zero?

If a gap remains, the tool asks you to set a contribution instead of giving an impossible finish date.
