Tax and VAT guide: add tax or extract included tax

Distinguish adding tax to a net amount from removing tax already included in a total.

When this tool helps

Adding a tax percentage and extracting included tax are inverse operations. If tax is already included in a total, simply subtracting that percentage of the total does not recover the original net price. Choose the mode that matches the amount you have.

The candidate provides Add tax and Remove included tax. Enter the amount and the applicable percentage yourself; the app does not identify your jurisdiction, product tax category or legal rate. It shows before-tax price, tax and including-tax price as separate values.

What to enter

These are the candidate Android fields, not a form on this website. Editable fields in the app start empty; modes and units are selected separately.

Checked example result100.00

A total of 120.00 including 20% tax contains a net amount of 100.00 and tax of 20.00. Subtracting 20% of 120.00 instead would give the wrong net amount.

Formula and assumptions

Add tax: gross = net × (1 + rate ÷ 100). Remove included tax: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)

  • One percentage rate is applied to one amount. Exemptions, compound taxes, thresholds and invoice-specific rounding are not modelled.
  • All displayed amounts use the same currency label, with money shown to two decimal places.

A common mistake to avoid

First decide whether your entered price includes tax. The percentage must be applied to the net base, not assumed to be a share of the gross total.

Find this tool in the Android update

  1. When you have the redesigned Android update, open Tools and search for Tax / VAT, or find it under Shopping.
  2. Open the tool, choose the mode or units relevant to your task, then enter your own values.
  3. Review the result and explanation. Use Calculate & save only if you want the calculation kept in local History; Copy result does not send it to our server.

This guide is an educational preview of the update in testing, not an announcement that Google Play has approved or published it. Calculations are in the native app; no web calculator or download is offered on this page.

Questions about Tax / VAT

Does the tool know the tax rate for my country?

No. You must supply the rate; no legal tax determination or current-rate lookup is provided.

Can I use a zero tax rate?

Yes. With a rate of 0, the before-tax and including-tax amounts are the same.
