Work-hours guide: overnight shifts, breaks and gross pay

Calculate a single shift’s paid duration and optional gross-pay estimate without payroll assumptions.

When this tool helps

Use this tool to check one shift from a start time, end time and unpaid break. It separates paid hours from the optional hourly-rate estimate. If the end clock time is earlier than the start, it treats the shift as ending the following day.

Choose the two clock times, enter unpaid-break minutes and add an hourly rate only if you want the pay estimate. This is not a timesheet, employer payroll record or overtime-rules engine. Keep original records and your contract when checking an actual payslip.

What to enter

These are the candidate Android fields, not a form on this website. Editable fields in the app start empty; modes and units are selected separately.

Shift starts and Shift ends
24-hour clock times selected in the time picker.
Unpaid break (minutes)
Enter the minutes not included in paid time; use 0 for no unpaid break.
Hourly rate
Optional rate in one currency label.

Checked example result7.5 hours

22:00 to 06:00 is an eight-hour overnight shift. Removing 30 unpaid minutes leaves 7.5 hours; at 20.00 per hour, estimated gross pay is 150.00.

Formula and assumptions

Paid hours = (shift minutes − unpaid-break minutes) ÷ 60; estimated pay = paid hours × hourly rate

  • At most one crossing of midnight is inferred; a multi-day shift is not supported. Equal start and end clock times mean zero elapsed minutes, not 24 hours.
  • No overtime premiums, statutory breaks, deductions, taxes or daylight-saving adjustments are applied.

A common mistake to avoid

Enter only unpaid breaks. Removing a paid break would understate paid hours. The app rejects a break longer than the clock-time shift.

Find this tool in the Android update

  1. When you have the redesigned Android update, open Tools and search for Work hours, or find it under Work.
  2. Open the tool, choose the mode or units relevant to your task, then enter your own values.
  3. Review the result and explanation. Use Calculate & save only if you want the calculation kept in local History; Copy result does not send it to our server.

This guide is an educational preview of the update in testing, not an announcement that Google Play has approved or published it. Calculations are in the native app; no web calculator or download is offered on this page.

Questions about Work hours

Can I use an overnight shift?

Yes. An earlier end clock time is treated as the next day and marked as overnight in the detail.

Is the pay result take-home pay?

No. It is a simple gross estimate at one hourly rate, before overtime rules, taxes and deductions.
