Average and totals guide: mean, count, sum and range

Enter a list of numbers and check the arithmetic mean alongside count, total, minimum and maximum.

When this tool helps

An arithmetic mean adds values and divides by their count. Seeing the count and sum alongside the mean helps catch a missing entry or a separator mistake. The candidate also shows the smallest and largest values so you can spot an unusual entry.

Enter up to 1,000 finite numbers separated by spaces, commas or new lines. Use a dot for decimals. Negative values are allowed, but text labels, currency symbols and non-numerical entries are not part of the list format.

What to enter

These are the candidate Android fields, not a form on this website. Editable fields in the app start empty; modes and units are selected separately.

Numbers · separate with spaces or commas
One list; new lines are also accepted. Use a dot as the decimal separator.

The values below explain the calculation. They are not a quote, a live measurement or an automatic answer for your situation.

Numbers
-2, 2 6 10

Checked example result4

The four numbers sum to 16. Dividing by four gives a mean of 4; minimum is −2 and maximum is 10.

Formula and assumptions

Arithmetic mean = sum of entered numbers ÷ count of entered numbers

  • Every entry has equal weight. This is not a weighted average, median, mode or statistical significance test.
  • Commas separate entries, not thousands or decimal fractions; very large arithmetic can exceed representable limits.

A common mistake to avoid

Typing 1,000 as one thousand will be read as two entries, 1 and 0. Enter 1000 for that number, and check the displayed count after pasting a list.

Find this tool in the Android update

  1. When you have the redesigned Android update, open Tools and search for Average & totals, or find it under Numbers.
  2. Open the tool, choose the mode or units relevant to your task, then enter your own values.
  3. Review the result and explanation. Use Calculate & save only if you want the calculation kept in local History; Copy result does not send it to our server.

This guide is an educational preview of the update in testing, not an announcement that Google Play has approved or published it. Calculations are in the native app; no web calculator or download is offered on this page.

Questions about Average & totals

Can I include negative numbers?

Yes. For example, −2, 2, 6 and 10 have an arithmetic mean of 4.

Does it calculate a weighted average?

No. Each listed value counts once and has the same weight in this candidate.
