Two-discounts guide: sequential savings, not added percentages

Apply a second discount to the already discounted price and optionally add tax afterwards.

When this tool helps

Two percentage discounts normally apply in sequence: the second discount acts on a smaller price after the first. That is why “20% then 10%” is not the same as a single 30% discount. This tool displays the intermediate prices and the combined discount.

Enter the original price and first discount. The second discount and final tax rate are optional; blank fields mean zero for those two options. Check the shop’s actual promotion terms, because fixed vouchers and capped offers follow different rules.

What to enter

These are the candidate Android fields, not a form on this website. Editable fields in the app start empty; modes and units are selected separately.

Original price
The amount before either discount.
First discount (%)
Required; between 0 and 100.
Second discount (%)
Optional; between 0 and 100 if supplied.
Tax after discounts (%)
Optional rate applied after both discounts.

Original price

First discount (%)

Second discount (%)
10
Tax / VAT (%)

Checked example result79.20

100.00 becomes 80.00 after 20% off, then 72.00 after another 10% off. That is a combined 28% discount. Adding 10% tax to 72.00 gives 79.20.

Formula and assumptions

After discounts = price × (1 − first ÷ 100) × (1 − second ÷ 100); apply optional tax last

  • Both discounts are percentages of the price remaining at their step, not fixed money amounts.
  • No minimum purchase, coupon cap, shipping charge or retailer-specific rounding rule is included.

A common mistake to avoid

Adding the two percentages overstates the saving unless one is zero. Read the combined-discount line to see the effective reduction before tax.

Find this tool in the Android update

  1. When you have the redesigned Android update, open Tools and search for Two discounts, or find it under Shopping.
  2. Open the tool, choose the mode or units relevant to your task, then enter your own values.
  3. Review the result and explanation. Use Calculate & save only if you want the calculation kept in local History; Copy result does not send it to our server.

This guide is an educational preview of the update in testing, not an announcement that Google Play has approved or published it. Calculations are in the native app; no web calculator or download is offered on this page.

Questions about Two discounts

Do 20% and 10% discounts combine to 30%?

No. In this sequential model they combine to 28%, leaving 72% of the original price before tax.

Can I leave the second discount empty?

Yes. It is optional and treated as zero; the original price and first discount still require valid values.
