Unit-price comparison guide: choose the better-value pack

Compare price per gram, litre or item without confusing pack size with value.

When this tool helps

A larger pack can cost more overall while still being cheaper per unit. This tool compares each pack’s price divided by its quantity, then identifies the lower unit price. It is useful for matching products sold in different pack sizes.

Give both quantities in the same unit. Convert kilograms to grams, or litres to millilitres, before comparing if necessary. The tool cannot know whether two products have the same quality, concentration, shelf life or usefulness to you.

What to enter

These are the candidate Android fields, not a form on this website. Editable fields in the app start empty; modes and units are selected separately.

Pack A · price and quantity
Price and total quantity for the first option.
Pack B · price and quantity
Price and total quantity for the second option, using the same currency and quantity unit.

The values below explain the calculation. They are not a quote, a live measurement or an automatic answer for your situation.

Pack A price

Pack B price
150
Pack B quantity
1000

Checked example resultPack B is better value

Pack A costs 0.20 per quantity unit; Pack B costs 0.15. Pack B’s unit price is 25% lower than the higher unit price, even though its pack price is higher.

Formula and assumptions

Unit price = pack price ÷ pack quantity; lower-unit-price saving = difference ÷ higher unit price × 100

  • Pack quantities must be greater than zero. Prices may be zero but cannot be negative.
  • The result compares price per unit only. Membership fees, delivery charges and expected waste must be considered separately.

A common mistake to avoid

Do not compare “500 grams” with “1 kilogram” by entering 500 and 1. Convert to the same unit first, otherwise the unit prices are not comparable.

Find this tool in the Android update

  1. When you have the redesigned Android update, open Tools and search for Compare prices, or find it under Shopping.
  2. Open the tool, choose the mode or units relevant to your task, then enter your own values.
  3. Review the result and explanation. Use Calculate & save only if you want the calculation kept in local History; Copy result does not send it to our server.

This guide is an educational preview of the update in testing, not an announcement that Google Play has approved or published it. Calculations are in the native app; no web calculator or download is offered on this page.

Questions about Compare prices

Does a larger pack always win?

No. The app compares unit prices; either pack can be cheaper per unit.

What does Same value mean?

The two unit prices are equal, allowing a small numerical tolerance for arithmetic precision. It does not mean the products are identical.
